Investing In Our Future:2020 Randall Smith Memorial Scholarship Recipients

The Randall Smith Scholarship award was established to commemorate the spirit of OCPAA founder (and former Santa Ana College Student Body President) Randall G. Smith and his love of politics and dedication to governmental relations, as well as his reputation of fairness, trust, and high ethics.  The $1,000 Scholarship is annually awarded to three different Santa Ana College students majoring in Political Science, Public Affairs, Communications, or Journalism, who demonstrate academic excellence.  This year’s deserving recipients include:

Because of the pandemic, Santa Ana College will be honoring the students at a virtual scholarship awards ceremony on May 29.

Ana Gabriela Frutos

 Santa Ana College Degree:     AA Degree in Communication Studies

Headed To:                              California State University, Long Beach to major in Communication Studies, with minor in Education

Misc.:                                      An enthusiastic student of Native Hawaiian & Latino descent from a one-parent family who enjoys helping teach 5th graders at her local church.

Andrew Lopez

 Santa Ana College Degree:       AA Degree in Communication Studies

Headed To:                                  California State University, Long Beach or California State University, Fullerton to major in Communications Studies, with minor in Psychology

Misc.:                                           A former street gang member of Latino descent from Santa Ana whose mom recently passed away.  He has a 3.56 GPA student, is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa
(PTK) honor society, is  active in his church, and enjoys helping feed the homeless at Mary’s Kitchen.

Phoebe Esperanza Segales

Santa Ana College Degree:      AA Degree in Communication Studies

Headed To:                                University of California, Santa Barbara or University of California San Diego to major in Communication Studies, with maybe a minor in Marketing

Misc.:                                          A Santa Ana resident of Latino descent who grew up in a one-parent family, who works part-time at McDonald’s and enjoys volunteering at a local Resources Center
near where she lives,  assisting the children from her neighborhood with their homework and school projects.
